Is This Still Formula One — or Has 2026 Changed the Sport Completely?
Drivers aren’t mincing words.“Formula E on steroids.”
“Mario Kart.”
“Energy management first, racing second.”
So let’s ask it directly:
Is 2026 still Formula One as we know it — or something fundamentally different?
What’s Clearly Changed
- Overtakes often decided by battery timing
- Lift‑and‑coast is now mandatory, not strategic
- Boost modes define battles more than braking zones
- Racecraft now includes software literacy
The Argument
- More overtakes than previous years
- Smaller cars race closer
- Less aero wake dependence
- Less tyre‑dictated racing
The Argument
- Artificiality concerns (boost ≈ DRS 2.0?)
- Drivers managing systems instead of pushing limits
- Risk of races becoming energy‑chess rather than combat
Others feel something primal has been diluted.
